The state of Qatar is one of the world’s fastest growing economies and amongst the wealthiest countries as measured by GDP per capita. Over the past few years the economy has grown largely due to oil and gas revenue and is expected to expand rapidly over the next few years. The GDP of Qatar grew by circa 8.7% in year 2009. Going forward, with the increase in production level of gas, Qatar’s economy is expected to grow by double digit figures over the course of the coming 3-4 years. Such expectations are as a result of proper governance by the Qatari government and its institutions while being a stable country in reference to both political and economical fronts.
Qatar is a significant oil producer and is the world’s largest supplier of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Such a case certainly would add further to the country’s large reserves. Even though the oil and gas markets are stable and continue to perform well – the Government of Qatar aims to diversify its income resources and is to develop its financial income spectrum to the global standards.
Qatar’s proven oil reserves were estimated at 27.4 billion barrels, accounting for 2.2% of global oil reserves. At the current level of its production at around 900,000/bpd, the reserve is equivalent to a future supply of 83 years. Similarly, Qatar has the world’s third largest natural gas reserves estimated at 25.6 trillion cubic meters, which is 14.4% of global proven reserves and is sufficient enough to supply for 3 digit future years. Moreover, politically, Qatar is one of the most ‘stable’ Middle Eastern countries- and is attractive to a number of global investors.
